Pope Francis has reaffirmed his desire to visit Nicaea, now known as Iznik in Turkey, in 2025 to commemorate the 1,700th anniversary of the first Ecumenical Council in the history of the Church. This historic event, which took place in 325, was a pivotal moment in the Church’s unity, as it addressed the controversy surrounding Arius’ denial of Jesus’ divinity. The Council of Nicaea led to the creation of the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed, a fundamental declaration of the Christian faith.
The Pope expressed his intention to travel to Turkey as part of the Jubilee Year, emphasizing the significance of this event as a “foundation on the path of the Church and of all humanity”. He also highlighted the importance of faith in Jesus as the Son of God made flesh for humanity’s salvation.
Pope Francis’ visit to Nicaea is expected to take place in May 2025, coinciding with the Jubilee Year. This trip will mark a significant moment in the Pope’s efforts to promote unity and ecumenism.
