Pope Francis has issued a heartfelt letter to Catholics in the Holy Land, marking the first anniversary of the start of the war. He expressed his closeness and prayers, describing the ongoing conflict as a “spiral of violence” and a “defeat” for humanity.
The Pope emphasized that war only destroys the future and that violence never brings peace. He praised Catholics in the Holy Land for remaining in their lands, praying, and loving despite the challenges. He referred to them as “a seed loved by God” and “shoots of hope” in the face of darkness.
To promote peace, Pope Francis invited all faithful to observe a day of prayer and fasting on 7 October, dubbing these actions “the weapons of love that change history.” He urged Christians not to tire of asking God for peace.
The Pope also extended his solidarity to all those suffering from the war, including people of various confessions and religions in the Middle East. He specifically mentioned the people of Gaza, those displaced, mothers who have lost children, and innocent civilians caught in the conflict.
In his letter, Pope Francis thanked bishops, priests, and individuals worldwide for their support and encouraged them to continue serving the holy people with love and unity.
The letter concluded with the Pope’s blessing and a call for protection from the Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace, and Saint Joseph, Patron of the Church.
