As the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games approach, Pope Francis has appealed for a truce in ongoing wars, urging nations to respect the ancient Greek tradition of establishing a ceasefire during the Games. He hopes that the Olympics will serve as a symbol of unity and peace, showcasing the power of sports to bring people together across cultures.
The Pope expressed his wish during the Angelus prayer in St Peter’s Square, recalling the ancient tradition of the “Olympic Truce” that allowed athletes and spectators to participate in the Games safely. He encouraged athletes to be messengers of peace and role models for the young.
Pope Francis also called for prayers for peace, remembering countries affected by war, including Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, Myanmar, and others. He emphasized that war is a defeat and urged for dialogue, reconciliation, and peace.
