The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) is commemorating a significant milestone – the 50th anniversary of its Episcopal Commission for Prison Pastoral Care. To mark this occasion, the bishops will observe the 37th Prison Awareness Sunday on 27 October. This year’s theme, “The Church through VIPS: Partners of PDLs in their journey towards wellness full of hope,” highlights the crucial role of Volunteers in Prison Ministry/Service (VIPS) in supporting those deprived of liberty.
According to Bishop Oscar Jaime L. Florencio, the theme recognizes the vital contributions of VIPS in Prison Pastoral Care. The Commission’s work encompasses monitoring corrections, generating public awareness, fostering societal cooperation, and implementing activities for the development of prisoners.
Fr. Nezelle O. Lirio, Executive Secretary of the Commission, expressed gratitude for the theme, noting its reflection of the Church’s commitment to caring for those in need. He fondly recalled 50 years of service, emphasizing the collective efforts of the correctional community and the many stories of hope and transformation facilitated by the volunteers. The anniversary celebration underscores the Church’s dedication to being a channel of God’s love and a blessing to those in prison.
