Patron Saints for Some Risky Jobs

There are many saints for us, and Catholic Church has assigned them as patrons of specific areas. Here are a few patron saints for those who do risky jobs.

  1. Military – St. Michael the Archangel

When you feel like losing your courage you can approach Saint Michael who fought against Satan. There’s no one mightier than the leader of all angels and head of the army of God to offer protection to those in the armed forces. In Hebrew, his name means “Who is like God,” which is also his battle cry — one worth adopting when you need a little courage.

2. Police – St. Jude

Policemen need more courage, and definitely they can seek the intercession of Saint Michael. And also they can approach St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of desperate cases and, of course, lost causes, so he’s handy for finding criminals too!. The Saint encourages the faithful to continue their path, even in the most difficult of circumstances

3. Firefighters – St. Florian

Saint Florian was a Roman Soldier who refused to execute Christians during the persecution of Diocletian. He who led fire brigades, had to face execution by fire. Not fearing death he goaded the executioner to light the fire saying: “If you do, I will climb to heaven on the flames.” As a result, he was scourged and drowned instead. Such bravery makes him an absolute patron saint for firefighters.

4. Lumberjacks – St. Gummarus

In civilian work, loggers have one of the most dangerous jobs, with the data provided, 132 people dying out of every 100,000. With such risk, the workers can look at this peaceful Belgian saint, who did his best to change his difficult wife and eventually became a hermit.

5. Roofers – St. Vincent of Saragossa

Working on the top of a house, sometimes in extreme heat, and at too much height is very risky.  Roofing is a risky job that can end up in serious injuries. Seek the aid of this Spanish saint who underwent horrific torture — including racking, having his flesh torn, and being burned on a steel frame — for his faith. With his body in pieces, he still managed to sing hymns of praise.

6. Truck Drivers – St. Christopher

Carrying goods from one place to another, city to city, or state to state, is a hilarious but highly risky occupation. Luckily truck drivers can rely upon St. Christopher who carried Child Jesus to the safety across a river. Hang a St. Christopher medal from your mirror for the reassurance that the 3rd-century saint will be protecting you along your journey.

7. Taxi Drivers – St. Fiacre

This may not seem to be a risky profession, but giving rides to strangers, especially perhaps in the middle of the night, leaves drivers open to accidents and physical attacks. For protection, call on St. Fiacre, an Irish priest and gardener from the 7th century, who became a patron for those riding in horse-drawn carriages in Paris.

8. Construction Workers – St. Thomas the Apostle

Although known more as “Doubting Thomas” for a moment of weakness, the Apostle eventually expressed such strength of faith that he was willing to die with Jesus. His courage makes him a patron saint for those in the building industry, who not only put their lives at risk but are trying to construct something for the good of others.

9. Fishers – St. Peter

A voyage in deep seas can be exceptionally dangerous. It is too dangerous especially when in extreme weather conditions. So look no further than the intercession of the first Pope and humble fisherman, St. Peter, for protection.
