October 18: Saint Luke the Evangelist

Saint Luke the Evangelist one of the four evangelists. St. Luke was born in  Antioch. He was a famous physician and painter in the area. Luke, a highly educated man, was converted by the Apostle Paul. St. Luke later became a disciple and colleague of the apostle.

Although Luke was not an eyewitness to Jesus and His life, he clearly understood Jesus’ life from the apostles. In addition, Luke began to write his Gospel after much research.  He began writing the Gospel in A D 60’s. Later he wrote the book of Acts of Apostles. Both books begin by addressing Theophilus. He is believed to be a historian or a pen name. It is said that Luke painted the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary first.

Luke, who was converted by the Apostle Paul, accompanied the apostle on his missionary journeys. Their relationship lasted until the death of the Apostle.

St. Luke died at age of 84 in Boeotia, according to a  “fairly early and widespread tradition”. According to the historians, Luke’s tomb was located in Thebes, whence his relics were transferred to Constantinople in the year 357. The apostle addresses Luke as “my beloved physician” in his epistle to the church in Colossae. He is decorating the position of the patron saint of artists, physicians, bachelors, surgeons, students and butchers.
