Nuns Bring Hope to Storm-Tossed Tybee Island

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and with another storm Milton looming in Florida, the Daughters of Mary of Nazareth brought a message of hope and healing to Tybee Island, Georgia. Mother Olga and her sisters led a parish mission at St. Michael the Archangel Church, spreading love, compassion, and the Gospel to a community reeling from natural disasters and personal struggles.

Fr. Brett Brannen, the pastor of St. Michael’s, invited Mother Olga and her community to lead the mission, seeking to revitalize his small flock’s evangelization efforts. The sisters’ visit coincided with an influx of refugees from areas devastated by Hurricane Helene, making Tybee Island a haven for those seeking shelter.

Armed with “Catholic goody bags” and a willingness to listen, the sisters and parishioners knocked on over 300 doors, collecting nearly 350 prayer intentions. They encountered individuals struggling with addiction, abuse, loss, and illness, offering a listening ear and a comforting presence.

A healing service at St. Michael’s drew many seeking solace. The sisters exposed the Blessed Sacrament, inviting worshippers to touch a special cloth wrapped around the monstrance, seeking healing and redemption. Longtime parishioner Betty Jayne Hendrix witnessed the profound impact: “Many people were deeply moved, placing the cloth on their bodies and walking away in tears.”

The mission’s success was palpable. Confessions were heard for four hours, and the church was packed for the healing service. Fr. Brannen observed, “We just have so many stories of people who needed that little nudge to say, ‘Hey, we love you. We care about you.'” The parishioners’ newfound boldness in sharing their faith will have a lasting impact on the community.

As Tybee Island welcomes Floridians fleeing Hurricane Milton, St. Michael’s parishioners stand ready to offer support and comfort. The Daughters of Mary of Nazareth’s visit has left an indelible mark, reminding the community that even amidst life’s storms, Jesus is present, offering hope and healing.
