Nigerian Priest Recounts Horror of Massacres During Lent and Holy Week

A Catholic priest in Nigeria has shared a harrowing account of the massacres that occurred during Lent and Holy Week in the country’s Middle Belt region. Fr. Moses Aondoanenge Igba, parish priest of St. Joseph Aboki, described the attacks, allegedly carried out by Fulani militants, as well-organized and systematic, resulting in the deaths of over 170 Christians. The priest attributed the repeated killings to an Islamization agenda and economic objectives, aiming to paralyze agricultural activities.

Igba recounted the tragic fate of some parishioners, including one who was brutally murdered despite seeking refuge in the parish house. He also spoke of another parishioner who narrowly survived a machete attack. Despite the danger, the priest chose to remain with his people, offering hope and guidance during the attacks. Igba criticized the Nigerian government for its perceived inaction and double standard in treating communities trying to defend themselves.

The priest urged the faithful not to give in to despair, emphasizing God’s supreme defense and the hope of resurrection. He encouraged those mourning their loved ones to remain steadfast, looking beyond the pain to the hope realized in the resurrection.
