May 05: Saint Angelus

Angelus was born in the Holy City of Jerusalem in 1185. His parents were God-fearing Jews. One day the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to them and advised them to accept the Christian faith. They soon converted to Christianity, and God soon gave them two sons, Angelo and John.

Both grew up in the fear of God and the fear of sin from an early age and entered the Carmelite Church when they became adults. Angelus literally obeyed the rules of the Church according to the Carmelite spirit. In addition to this, he performed many other rituals with the permission of the nobleman. He never drank wine. His only food was bread and water. He slept on a piece of wood as his bed. He sang psalms every day.

After receiving the priesthood, Angelus entered a forest and lived in solitude and severe penance for about five years. It is said that an angel was with him at this time. After his exile, he was commissioned to travel to Rome to seek approval for the new law of the Carmelite Church.

God has performed many miracles through him. Angelus preached the gospel in Italy and Sicily with a fervent missionary spirit. Angelus, who had fought hard against injustice, rebuked a miscreant in Cecilia and demanded that he be corrected. On 5 May 1226, an angry man stabbed Angelus five times with his sword while he was offering the Mass. He surrendered his soul into the hands of God with the psalm, “Lord, I trust in you.”
