“Let Us Build a More Fraternal, More Just World, Together.” Pope Francis on International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust

Ahead of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Pope Francis stressed the importance of remembering the atrocities of Auschwitz, emphasizing that the extermination of millions, particularly Jews and Christians, must never be forgotten. He called for cooperation to eliminate antisemitism and all forms of discrimination, urging the need to educate young people about fraternity, forgiveness, and peace.

During his address, the Pope expressed deep concern about the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, which started in April 2023, describing it as the world’s most severe crisis with serious impacts on South Sudan. He urged both parties involved to end violence and engage in peace talks, asking the international community to support these efforts.

Pope Francis also addressed the situation in Colombia’s Catatumbo region, where conflicts have displaced over 30,000 people, expressing his solidarity with those affected and calling for a peaceful resolution.

In his meditation before the Angelus, he reflected on a Gospel passage, suggesting that Catholics might be too familiar with Jesus to fully recognize him as the Savior. He challenged believers to reflect on Jesus’s unique authority and their need for salvation, linking this realization to the significance of the jubilee year.

Additionally, the pope acknowledged World Leprosy Day, urging for the inclusion of people affected by Hansen’s disease in society. He concluded by encouraging media professionals to spread hope and invited Catholics to seek Mary’s help in recognizing Jesus and embracing his love for the poor.
