Jesus on the Quad: Students Adore Christ at One of the Largest Public Universities

The St. John’s Catholic Newman Center at the University of Illinois (UIUC) brought the Blessed Sacrament to the campus’s Main Quad in early October. Hundreds of students gathered, some sitting, some kneeling, many singing or praying quietly, as the Eucharist became the center of the bustling public‑university quad.

The event was part of the center’s “Feast Week” celebrating St. John Henry Newman (feast day 9 Oct.). “We decided to take it outside and bring Jesus onto the quad as a way to witness to the campus who we are and who Jesus is in the Eucharist, and to bring our faith into the public square,” said Fr. Daniel McShane, assistant chaplain. FOCUS missionaries were on hand; one encounter saw a young man who said, “I don’t know how to pray,” kneel with a missionary and then spend over 20 minutes in personal prayer.

The outreach comes amid a noticeable Catholic resurgence at UIUC, the nation’s fifth‑largest public university (∼60,000 students). The Newman Center, the biggest in the U.S. with a 600‑student residence, hosts weekly Source + Summit adoration nights. This year, interest in the OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation for Adults) program jumped from 40 to 130 students, with 80 regular attendees. Around 1,000 students participate in roughly 80 FOCUS Bible studies, many in fraternity and sorority houses.

Fr. Lee Brokaw attributes the momentum to the students themselves: “It’s the students. They’re the ones going out and inviting their friends and sharing their faith.” The 10:30 a.m. Sunday Mass at the Newman Center is regularly standing‑room only, with chaplains delivering homilies that resonate deeply.
