January 21: Saint Agnes

Saint Agnes was born in Rome at the beginning of the 4th century to noble and pious parents. Agnes, as a child, devoted herself completely to Christ.

Many aristocrats longed to marry the beautiful Agnes. Prominent among them was the son of the governor. He told her about his wish to marry Agnes the beautiful lady. However, Agnes refused, saying that she was completely submissive and could not betray him. He became very sad and was soon seen as a patient. Realizing the cause of his illness, his father brought Agnes into his home and persuaded her to accept his son’s wife. But Agnes, who seemed adamant in her decision, was pleased to realize that she was a Christian because he just wanted her to back down from his decision because of threats or persecution.

The governor immediately ordered that Agnes be arrested and brought before him. With life and death before her, he bargained for the faith of the saint. But she remained steadfast. The enraged Governor dragged Agnes to the temple to adore the gods. But, despite all the capable attempts, it was to no avail.

The enraged governor threw Agnes in front of a group of thugs with the intention of defiling her body. However, an invisible force rushed at her as she rushed towards her. The next order was to burn Agnes alive. Accordingly, she was thrown into a fiery furnace. But the flames could do no harm to that sacred body. Finally, the judge ordered the beheading of the saint. She smiled without any fear and bowed before the killer. The assassins did their due diligence. Her soul traveled to heaven.
