January 19: Saint Canute

Canute was an ambitious king (1080-1086) who sought to strengthen the Danish Monarchy was a devout Catholic and devotedly supported the Church and the Pope and had designs on the English throne. Slain by rebels in 1086, he was the first Danish king to be canonized. He was recognized by the Roman Catholic Church as the patron saint of Denmark in 1101.

Canute was able to completely eradicate corruption in the country. Thus peace prevailed in his country in every way. The king prostrated himself before the cross and paid special attention to honoring the saints and priests. He spent a lot of finance building and decorating churches. He even donated his precious crown to a temple in the capital.

When Canute was once in the temple, he was surrounded by his enemies. Realizing the danger, Canute immediately confessed and accepted the Holy Eucharist. Then he raised his hands and stood in front of the altar, ready to die. Instantly a spear thrown by the enemy through the window fell on his head and he soon died.
