Pope Francis writes in the preface to the book “The Christian Heritage in Iraq” by German journalist and theologian Matthias Kopp, spokesperson for the German Bishops’ Conference (DBK) and consultor for the Dicastery for Communication. This work, published by Herder and presently accessible in German, explores the historical development of Christianity in Iraq, emphasizing Pope Francis’ visit to the nation in 2021. The book sheds light on the efforts of the Church and the Holy See regarding the challenges faced by Christians in Iraq.
In March 2021, the Pope visited Iraq to show his support and love for Christians and everyone in the nation despite the ongoing pandemic and security risks. He affirmed that he had hope for Iraq because of its people, who were working to rebuild society, promote democracy, and engage in meaningful dialogue between religions. His meeting with Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Al-Sistani was crucial, sending a message that using religion to justify violence is wrong. During his visit to Ur, representatives of different religions came together to pray, honoring the shared heritage dating back to Abraham. Iraq has a rich Christian history that remains largely unexplored, including ancient theological schools and centuries of peaceful coexistence between Christians and Muslims.
Pope believes that Iraq cannot be imagined without Christians, as they play a key role in its identity of coexistence and tolerance. I hope Iraq’s people can demonstrate that peaceful living despite differences is possible.
