Indonesia Unveils the World’s Tallest Statue: ‘Jesus Christ the Saviour’

Indonesia has just unveiled the world’s tallest Jesus statue, “Jesus Christ the Saviour,” standing at 61 meters high in North Sumatra’s Sibeabea Hill, near Toba Lake. This magnificent structure surpasses the renowned Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, by a whopping 20 meters.

The statue was inaugurated by Indonesian Bishops’ Conference president Antonius Subianto Bunjamin on 19 September. But what makes this statue even more special is that it was blessed by Pope Francis during his recent visit to Indonesia. Pope Francis also signed a prayer inscribed under the statue, highlighting Jesus’ infinite love.

According to Bishop Bunjamin, this hill is “blessed by God” and is expected to strengthen the faith of people. The statue’s open hands symbolize Jesus’ acceptance of everyone with love, as noted by Capuchin Archbishop Kornelius Sipayung.

Located in North Sumatra, an area with a significant Christian population, this statue is a beacon of hope and faith. With 1.1 million Catholics and 4.01 million Protestants calling North Sumatra home, this iconic landmark is sure to become a revered destination.
