Christmas carols are “traditional songs that are sung just before Christmas that celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ”. Looking deeper into the history of Christmas carols is interesting.
For the very first time, in 1928, the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge’s Christmas Eve carol service was broadcast over the public airways. The first Christmas carols were recorded in 129 AD. By the 12th century, songs referring to the nativity themes emerged.
According to Oxford Dictionaries, one of the oldest printed carols is the ‘Boar’s Head Carol, which dates from 1521. Later, in all the ages, there had a popular carol song. Carols were being collected and printed widely by the 19th century. Christmas carol service was introduced by Edward White Benson in Truro, who later become the Archbishop of Canterbury.
In later years the people used to make carol services in public places and it became the most important service and tradition of the Christmas season.
