Saint Amandus was born in 584 in France. At the age of 20, he joined a small monastery in Judea without the consent of his parents. Less than a year later, his father found Amandus and forced him to return home. But Amandus did not give up. As a result, the father became angry and threatened that he would not give the son, the wealth of the family. Then Amandus said, “Christ alone is my inheritance.”
He then went to Tours and received the priesthood. He then spent fifteen years in missionary work at Borges. In 629 he has ordained a missionary bishop. At that time Dagobert I was forced to leave the country because of his moral outrage against the wickedness of the king. But before long, the king’s request was granted and he returned and baptized Seizbert, the king’s son.
Shistayus was used to preach the gospel among the built people of Kent. However, the people of Kent severely persecuted Amandus and threw him into the river. For a time, Amandus’ actions had no effect. But in the end, many people accepted the faith. In the meantime, Amandus established a number of monasteries in Belgium. Although Maastricht was forced to take over the administration of the diocese, he continued his efforts to convert the builders.
When he was old, Amandus went to Elnone. He faithfully served God’s people even on the Sabbath. In 676 the barren saint died.
