Expelled Missionaries from Nicaragua could Open a Mission in Costa Rica

The Daughters of Charity of Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta, the missionaries expelled from Nicaragua, are evaluating the possibility of opening a mission in the Diocese of Tilarán – Liberia, in northwestern Costa Rica. They plan their new mission to help homeless people and families in need.

The proposal came from the Bishop of Tilarán – Liberia, Msgr. Manuel Eugenio Salazar Mora, on 6 July knelt to greet the superior of the nuns who were expelled from Nicaragua by the regime of Daniel Ortega, said an article published by the Episcopal Conference of Costa Rica.

“When the nuns were expelled from Nicaragua, they lost all their property and we received them at the border. So, I proposed to them to create a foundation, in Cañas, an issue that resonated with them” said Bishop Salazar.

“After negotiations, we have the project, already discussed; but, still, we have not signed the respective contract. Let us pray that it materializes” he added.

Likewise, the Prelate explained that the process is now in the hands of the Superior General of the Congregation, who must evaluate the proposal. If the project is approved, the other legal procedures could continue.

In this context, the Daughters of Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta visited the Catechesis Center on 26 July, in the Kenedy de Cañas neighborhood, to evaluate the infrastructure as their possible mission house.

Previously, the nuns had already toured the area to see the reality of those in need in the area.

In this regard, Mother Agnecita, responsible for the 13 houses of the congregation in Central America, pointed out that they are happy because in Cañas they are going to visit poor families, “help Father Harvey Flores —parish priest in Cañas center— with the sacraments, teach to the children of catechism, also, to visit the elderly and bring them communion for a spiritual life”.

“Later, we will see if we can help the homeless with food and their spiritual part,” he said.

As specified by the Episcopate, in the new mission house there would be some nuns who come from the closed mission of Nicaragua.
