European Bishops Call for World Peace and Renewed Pastoral Mission at Salzburg Plenary Assembly

Gathering in Salzburg for their plenary assembly, the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences (CCEE) issued an urgent plea for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine and all war-torn regions worldwide. Describing the war in Ukraine as Europe’s largest military conflict since World War II, the assembly warned against growing accustomed to violations of civilizational norms. Echoing Pope Leo XIV and the spirit of Saint Francis of Assisi, the bishops emphasized that true peace cannot simply be negotiated or imposed, but must begin with genuine reconciliation and conversion within the human heart.

The assembly also addressed key organizational and leadership updates, reconfirming Archbishop Gintaras Grušas of Vilnius, Lithuania, as CCEE President for the 2026–2031 term. Joining him in the leadership team are newly elected Vice-Presidents Archbishop Eamon Martin of Armagh and Archbishop DraĹľen Kutleša of Zagreb. Centered on the overarching theme of “Evangelization and Synodality: The Mission of Priests in Europe Today,” Archbishop Grušas highlighted that evangelization defines the Church’s core mission, while synodality describes its collaborative execution through mutual listening, communion, and shared discernment.

Further contributions from Church leadership underscored the practical implementation of synodality and priestly ministry across the continent. Cardinal Mario Grech, Secretary General of the Synod, highlighted the vital role of local dioceses in the synodal process as the Church looks ahead to the Ecclesial Assembly at the Vatican in October 2028. Meanwhile, Cardinal Lazzaro You Heung-sik, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Clergy, urged priests across Europe to embody fraternity, embrace ongoing formation, serve the marginalized, and build constructive bridges through compassionate dialogue.
