The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has issued a stark warning as intensifying conflict across Yemen continues to plunge the nation’s children into unprecedented peril. Recent surges in violence have displaced over 104,000 people—including more than 57,000 children—in just two weeks, forcing vulnerable families from their homes and exposing young people to severe danger and loss of life.
This sudden displacement compounds what is already recognized as one of the world’s most catastrophic humanitarian crises. Prior to the latest escalation, an estimated 12.2 million children across Yemen were already reliant on humanitarian assistance. Food insecurity remains critical, with over 2.2 million children under five suffering from acute malnutrition, including more than 515,000 facing severe acute cases that put their immediate survival at risk.
The renewed violence has severely disrupted essential infrastructure and basic services nationwide. Over 240 schools have closed or suspended classes—impacting more than 137,000 students and adding to the 3.2 million school-age children already out of school—while dozens of UNICEF-supported health facilities face ongoing operational interruptions.
Although UNICEF has deployed mobile health and nutrition teams to reach displaced families, the agency cautions that these emergency interventions cannot keep pace with the rapidly worsening situation. UNICEF is urgently appealing to all conflicting parties to uphold international humanitarian law, safeguard civilians and children, and grant safe, unhindered access for critical aid delivery.
