Devotion to Infant Jesus of Prague

Devotion to Infant Jesus of Prague is world-famous. Prague is a place situated in the Czech republic. The statue of Infant Jesus of Prague is rich with myths and legends.

Most historians believe that the image was carved in the 14th century by a monk who had a vision of Jesus in the 14th century in a Cistercian monastery in Spain.

This statue was in Spain for many centuries. In the sixteenth century, there is a tradition that this form came into the possession of Mother Therese in the 16 century. During the reign of the Habsburg dynasty in Prague, the form of infant Jesus arrived in Prague in 1556. This figure of infant Jesus was given to Maria by his daughter, Duchess Isabella Monique, as a wedding present. The statue was kept by the family for years until 1628, and the site was later handed over to the Carmelite monastery, where the princess of Lobcosbs told the monastery dignitary:

“I give you the most precious possession I have. If you respectfully preserve this image, you will prosper forever.” Soon Prague was attacked and the monastery was in disarray. The statue was missed for a long time. The statue was found from the broken pieces of the monastery. The priest kept the statue in the new chapel. While cleaning the statue, Infant Jesus told the priest, ‘If you give me more respect, you will be blessed more’. He didn’t have much money to rebuild the church. As per the suggestion of Infant Jesus, he had kept the statue in front of the chapel and he could receive more offerings to rebuild the church. In just a few days, the shrine was renovated and restored, and today, the Basilica of Infant Jesus of Prague is a holy place visited by thousands of pilgrims every day.
