Acca of Hexam was a Nerthumbrian saint and Bishop of Hexam. At an early age, he left home and moved in with Bosa, Bishop of Dyer in the York area of England. He provided the necessary education for Acca.
Bosa’s discipline and work ethic made a significant impact on Acca’s life. St. Wilfried also guided Acca in due course. Acca, who chose the monastic life, was loved and revered by all for his devotion and holiness. Later he was elected abbot of the monastery named after Andrew and later succeeded Wilfred.
Acca’s policy as a pastor is most exemplary. He and others were not exempt from following church rules. Care was always taken to keep the remains and monuments of the martyrs in a pious manner. He was given generous encouragement to Bible students and scholars. The official liturgy of the Church in England was revised to include hymns in keeping with Roman traditions.
During the last days of his life, Acca was exiled for some time. He died in 740. His body was buried at Hexam.
