October 13 : Saint Edward

Saint Edward was born in 1003, United Kingdom. He was the son of Aetherland the Unready and Emma of Normandy.  When Saint was a child, his mother offered Edward to God. From an early age, Edward lived a life that justified his mother’s promise. The saint was keen to attend prayers and the Holy Eucharist.

Exiled at the age of thirteen, Edward became King of England twenty-seven years later. When Edward became king, his childhood virtues of humility, holiness, and concern for the poor began to shine again. When Edward took over the government, the situation in the country was deplorable. Frequent wars plunged the country into poverty. More than half of the farmland has been turned into wasteland.

But for King Edward, who relied on God, these were not insurmountable crises. Edward’s rule and holiness continued to lead the country to prosperity. The saint married a princess named Edit of Wessex to satisfy the nobles and subjects, but the two practiced celibacy by mutual consent.

The saint paid special attention to love and care for the poor and sick. The saint visited the poor and the sick who arrived at the palace gates and gave them what they needed and comforted them. On many occasions God has performed many miracles through the saint. The saint loved his subjects more than wealth.

Once the saint saw a servant stealing from his treasury three times. Edward let go of the servant, saying that he needed more money than he did.

He ruled his country peacefully for twenty-four years. Many destroyed Churches were renovated  that were destroyed during this period and many new churches also built by him. The last church built by the saint was that of Westminster Abbey. The holy body of the saint was buried in the same Church. The body of the saint, who was called to the Eternal Gift in 1066, is still not decayed.
