26 November 2021 Luke 21:29-33
Friday of the 34th Week in Ordinary Time
SEASON OF REDEMPTION
Consider the fig tree and all other trees (Lk 21:29).
Jesus’ invitation to ‘consider the fig tree and all other trees’ is to observe the body language and response of trees to different seasons. Especially in places where there are four seasons, in autumn trees shed their leaves in preparation to face the tribulation of winter. In winter trees appear dormant and dead. When spring begins the branches start sprouting and in summer full blossom. After a winter of lifelessness (dormancy) trees come to life in spring and autumn.
It gives a lesson to us to understand the mystery of end times. There will be tribulations and terrific things happening during the end times. The Disciples of Christ also must go through this ‘season of tribulations’ (just like winter for the trees) but that is not the end. It is not a season of condemnation but a ‘season of redemption’ (just like spring and summer for trees) awaiting the faithful of Christ. Therefore, the disciples shall not paralyze themselves of fear and anxiety, but shall be full of hope. Amen.
