Daily Gospel: Intrinsic Value

22 November 2021 Luke 21:1-4

Monday of the 34th Week in Ordinary Time

INTRINSIC VALUE

Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others” (Luke 21:3).

Divine way of valuation is different from the human way. There are two kinds of valuation for anything we offer for the maintenance of religion, faith and charitable works namely, monetary value and secondly intrinsic value.  Jesus is not looking into the monetary value of the widow’s offering but appreciates the intrinsic value of her gift. The intrinsic value of an offering is in terms of self-giving involved in it. To those who consider only monetary value (business world) her action is an action of reckless stupidity, in the eyes of God her giving is an awesome gesture of self-giving.

‘Kingdom economics’ follows the intrinsic value whereas ‘world economics’ is the quantity of your offerings. Amen.
