20 November 2021 Luke 20:27-40
Saturday of the 33rd Week in Ordinary Time
ESCHATOLOGICAL GENERATION
Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection (Luke 20: 34-36).
‘Resurrection of Dead’, a fundamental belief in Christian eschatology. We profess it every time we recite a creed (I believe in God). Christian perspective of death is so positive that we look at the mystery of death not as an end, but as a passage/ transit point/ door to heaven.
Sadducees who do not believe in resurrection attempt to make resurrection ridiculous by asking a designed question to trap Jesus about a totally absurd situation of a woman marrying seven brothers. Jesus corrects them that there is resurrection by telling them that after death when they are raised they are not like husbands and wives anymore, but like angels. And, God is not the God of death but of living.
Two kinds of people could be identified in this context namely ‘empirical people’ and ‘eschatological people’. Belief in resurrection helps us to be eschatological people leading a heaven oriented life.
Eschatological people do everything with eternal significance whereas empirical people do everything with earthly significance. Amen.
