The Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC) has come out against the government’s decision to conduct official functions on 2 October, a Sunday. According to the government declaration, the Chief Minister would be inaugurating the statewide campaign against drugs on Sunday, which is Gandhi Jayanti. KCBC denounced that converting Sundays into working days for various reasons was becoming common.
The Syro Malabar Church said that the government’s program will hinder the faithful’s Sunday worship and the catechism classes for children and suggested the program may be postponed to another day. The Church said it was duty bound to cooperate with government projects like the anti-drug campaigns.
As Gandhi Jayanti is observed as Sevanavaram, a week dedicated to service, the Church said that will fully cooperate with the scheduled program held on any other day in the week.
