As Christians around the world celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ, a senseless and brutal attack was unfolding in Kwande County, Benue state, Nigeria. Armed Islamic militants targeted Christian communities, leaving a trail of death and destruction in their wake.
The worst of the attacks occurred during a Christmas Day church service in Turan, a predominantly Catholic Tiv community, where 11 people lost their lives. The militants also launched surprise attacks on other communities, injuring many and forcing others to flee their homes. The violence has left the community reeling, with many homes damaged and four out of five community areas largely deserted.
Despite efforts by local leaders, including Bishop Isaac Bundepuun Dugu, to promote peace and reconciliation, the community’s struggles persist, casting a dark shadow over the Christmas celebrations.
