Bomb on a Catholic Church Building in Myanmar Urges Prayer for Peace

Cardinal Charles Maung Bo, the Archbishop of Yangon, prayed for peace in Myanmar during an interfaith event while the military junta continued its attacks. He highlighted the importance of cultivating inner peace and becoming ambassadors of peace, particularly in troubled times. This prayer gathering coincided with the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes and took place in the Bago region.

The Cardinal’s remarks followed recent bombings that damaged the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Mindat, which had been designated as a cathedral for a newly established diocese. Fortunately, there were no injuries as the local priests and congregation had already evacuated due to security concerns. Cardinal Bo reflected on the suffering faced by many in Myanmar, drawing parallels to the struggles of Mary and the Holy Family.

He empathized with mothers in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, likening their difficult journeys to Mary’s experience giving birth in a stable while seeking safety. He emphasized that true peace is not the absence of challenges but the presence of God during hardships. Cardinal Bo called for unity and bridge-building in a divided world, recalling how Mary and Joseph became refugees to protect Jesus.

He also spoke of the deep sorrow felt by mothers who have lost children to violence, inspiring resilience, forgiveness, and a commitment to peace. Cardinal Bo urged everyone to envision a peaceful Myanmar and stressed the importance of supporting displaced families, promoting interfaith efforts, and advocating for justice. He concluded his remarks by praying for the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes and encouraging all to renew their efforts to create a world where peace and dignity prevail.
