Pope Francis has appointed Msgr. José María Gil Tamayo, current Bishop of Ávila, as Coadjutor Archbishop of Granada.
As reported by the Spanish Episcopal Conference (CEE), once he takes possession of his new pastoral responsibility, Msgr. Gil Tamayo will be waiting for the see to become vacant to be an automatically appointed archbishop.
Bishop Gil Tamayo acquires the status of Vicar General of the Archbishopric previously.
In this way, the prelate of Extremaduran origin, who will have turned 65 in 2022, will relieve Bishop Javier Martínez, who has been in charge of this responsibility for the last 19 years, at the head of the Archdiocese of Granada.
Bishop Gil Tamayo was the director of the Secretariat of the Commission for Social Communications Media of the EEC, director of the Information Service of the Catholic Church in Spain and consultant to the Pontifical Council for Social Communications.
He was also a deputy for the Spanish language of the spokesman of the Holy See during the period of the resignation of Benedict XVI, Sede Vacante, Conclave and election of Pope Francis, and general secretary of the CEE between 2013 and 2018.
Since March 2020 he is a member of the Executive Commission of the CEE.
