Biking to Beirut for Cancer Patients Amidst War

Inspired by their personal experiences and commitment to fighting cancer, Dr. Lea Kallassi, a family medicine doctor, and Ralph Al Khoury, a paragliding instructor, decided to set an extraordinary journey. Even amidst the tensions of the war, they are biking from Paris to Beirut to raise funds for cancer patients.

The economic crisis in Lebanon, exacerbated by the 2020 Beirut explosion and COVID-19, has made cancer treatment inaccessible to many. With the current war displacing over a million people, the situation has become even more dire. “Even a $10 or $25 medication is a quarter of the salary of a woman now in Lebanon,” Dr. Kallassi emphasized.

Supported by the Barbara Nassar Association and sponsored by the Lebanese Ministry of Health and Ministry of Youth and Sports, their 40-day journey aims to raise awareness and funds for cancer patients. “This mission is about more than just miles, it’s about hope,” they stated on their Instagram page.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding their arrival in Beirut on 3 November, the duo remains determined. “We plan to arrive on 3 November … We are still determined to reach Lebanon… and we’ll figure it out. We are still determined to do it, to finish the project, to get the money, and give it to the Barbara Nassar Association,” Dr. Kallassi assured.

Their meeting with Pope Francis in Rome was a highlight of their journey. The Pope signed the Lebanese flag and expressed his love and prayers for Lebanon, giving hope to those in despair. “This picture of the Pope with the Lebanese flag has given hope to many… people now are in despair. They need any sign of hope,” Dr Kallassi said.

The biking initiative has become a beacon of hope amidst the chaos, demonstrating the power of human resilience and compassion. As Dr Kallassi and Al Khoury press on, their determination inspires others to join the fight against cancer and support those affected by the war in Lebanon.
