Be a Better Co-worker

Many employees spend more time with their co-workers than with members of their own family. Learning to get along with your co-workers can make your life on the job much more enjoyable. There are a number of actions you can take to improve the way you deal with your colleagues so they’ll view you in a more favorable light.

Reduce Noise

Make an effort to reduce your noise level, particularly if you work in a close environment. Avoid loud conversations with other co-workers and talk softly on the telephone. Keep your computer’s volume low when using the sound and keep the number of speakerphone calls to a minimum.

Neatness and Cleanliness Count

Nobody likes a slob, so make a point of keeping your work area neat, especially if you share it with others. Pay attention to your personal hygiene to avoid offending those around you, and avoid being a messy eater at your desk.

Avoid Gossip

While participating in water cooler gripe sessions can make you feel like you’re “in the loop,” it’s better to refrain from the practice. In a close work environment, any negative comment you make about another person is likely to get back to him.

Don’t Whine

Most workers can find something to complain about, but constant whining only serves to create an atmosphere of negativity. If you come across a grumpy or negative co-worker, try using humor to change her attitude. If you have a complaint or suggestion, discuss the matter with your boss instead of unloading on your co-workers.

Avoid Boasting

Not everyone is going to be as thrilled about your recent promotion or public praise from the boss as you are. Don’t fish for compliments from your co-workers about your latest accomplishments; accept them gracefully if you do receive them.

Be Helpful

Help a co-worker who is struggling with a task or overloaded with work. Your gesture will be greatly appreciated, and your colleague may be more likely to return the favor in the future.

Compliment Others
Most people like a little recognition now and then, so pay your co-workers a sincere compliment when it is due. You’ll develop a stronger rapport and help to build a feeling of teamwork.

Remain Professional

Regardless of how upset you become over the words or actions of a co-worker, avoid getting into a public disagreement. If you need to resolve an issue, talk to your colleague in private in a calm and rational manner.

Avoid Trouble

If all of your efforts to get along with a particular co-worker have failed, consider avoiding the individual as much as possible. You’ll both appreciate not having to deal with the awkwardness, and you’ll reduce the possibility of an unpleasant confrontation.

Change Yourself

It’s much easier to change your own attitudes and behaviors than those of the people around you. Rather than pointing out the faults of your co-workers, focus on improving your own shortcomings instead.
