Richard was born in AD 1197 in the United Kingdom, Europe. He and his younger brother were orphaned in early childhood. The saint and his brother gave up studies and managed their estate. Finally, when they became adults he decided to move to the monastery to lead a priestly life.
He studied priesthood at Oxford. In 1235, he was appointed as the chancellor of Oxford and he became archbishop of Canterbury. Richard and the king have some disagreements and as a result, he was exiled from there. Later after the death of King Edmund, Richard was appointed as the bishop of Portchester. But King Henry III confiscated all of the property of the diocese. The bishop was put in trouble during those time. Even though he became famous for his attitude of charity. All the people loved Richard. He had taken care of all the sick and poor. He fed them with huge respect and love. He died during behesting the soldiers to the Crusade on 31 April 1253.
