Bishop Krzysztof Nykiel, Regent of the Apostolic Penitentiary, has invited the faithful to rediscover the Sacrament of Reconciliation, emphasizing that no one is ever too far gone to seek divine mercy. Speaking to Vatican News ahead of an upcoming formation seminar, Bishop Nykiel addressed those who have drifted away from confession due to fear, shame, or repeated falls into sin, reminding them that God never stops waiting for their return.
The initiative stems from a growing demand among lay Catholics seeking a deeper understanding of the sacrament. While the Apostolic Penitentiary has hosted a Course on the Internal Forum for over three decades to train priests in hearing confessions with sensitivity and competence, it recognized an equal need to assist penitents themselves. The resulting formation program aims to help the lay faithful prepare for confession and approach the sacrament with greater awareness, serenity, and trust.
Initially encouraged by Pope Francis and strongly supported by Pope Leo XIV, the program is now entering its fifth edition. The two-day seminar, held on October 23 and 24, has drawn significant interest from the global Church, bringing together more than 800 participants both in person and online as part of an ongoing commitment to spiritual formation.
