The Annunciation also shares memories of God seeking man’s cooperation and consent for his acts. In the Old Testament, we find God Almighty like who travels on the wings of the wind and speaks through thunder, who burns the forest mountains with his breath. God is an authority who likes to distance himself from man to some extent by giving curses instead of evil and virtues instead of good.
The evangelist Luke presents a different God who seeks the cooperation and approval of his creation for the fulfilment of his plans from this authoritative God who demands infinite obedience and faithfulness. Mary bows down in bondage when she realizes that nothing that happens in life is a coincidence and that the hands of God can be seen behind it all.
Through the genealogy of 42 generations from Abraham to Christ, the genealogy of Matthew and Luke points to the fact that the Annunciation is not an isolated incident. Annunciation should be seen as one of the moments of the definite rescue plan from the beginning. Truly, nothing that happens in life is a coincidence. Every one of them is a link in a series of eternal rescue plans for you and humanity. Every event in life is considered to be good news.
Each moment in our life should have to see with a special sight of God’s plan. If we can do it, be assured of the growth of the Saviour in our life. Recognizing God’s will for us, we too, like Mary, will fulfil his mission. Through that, we too take part in saving the world with God. The Annunciation does not end with the birth of Saviour. It continues to each birth and through the discharge of duty.
God looks forward to the fulfilment of the sacrament that will be revealed through the Lamb of God. He seeks our help for its completeness. We should try to see every day as the day when God sends an angel to us, seeking our consent and acknowledging the remnants of the goodness that abounds in us. We must learn to preach in obedience like Mary by Behold the handmaid of the Lord.
Prayer: God I cannot take everything that happens in my life as good news. But in hindsight, it turns out that everything that happened was meant to be goodness. Enable me to take everything that happens in life for the rest of your life as your own and humbly accept it as Mary.
