American theologian Dr. John C. Cavadini, a Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame, has been named the recipient of the 2026 Ratzinger Prize. Awarded by the Joseph Ratzinger-Benedict XVI Vatican Foundation and approved by Pope Leo XIV, the prestigious honor recognizes Dr. Cavadini’s extensive research in Patristics, particularly his deep scholarship on Saint Augustine. Pope Leo XIV will personally present the award during a ceremony in the Apostolic Palace on December 19.
Expressing his gratitude, Dr. Cavadini noted that he has always sought to model his vocation as a theologian after Origen of Alexandria—a third-century figure who strived to be a vir ecclesiasticus, or a “man of the Church.” He reflected that his tenure at Notre Dame has allowed him to integrate his commitment to both the Church and the academic world, expressing deep appreciation for an award that honors both aspects of his life’s work.
Dr. Cavadini becomes the 32nd scholar to receive the Ratzinger Prize since its inception in 2011. While widely recognized as a premier expert on early Church history and Patristics, his research also spans contemporary theology, including writings on the theological contributions of Benedict XVI and Francis. Fr. Roberto Regoli, President of the Foundation, highlighted Dr. Cavadini’s dual impact, pointing to his leadership at Notre Dame’s McGrath Institute for Church Life and his dedicated service to both academic rigor and pastoral faith formation.
The announcement coincides with preparations for the 2027 centenary of Joseph Ratzinger’s birth. In anticipation, the Vatican Foundation is sponsoring three international conferences in November 2026 across the United States and Africa. These symposia will address topics such as the intersection of technical progress and moral responsibility, Ratzinger’s theological sources, and his vision for Africa as a source of spiritual renewal for the global Church.
The centennial commemorations will culminate in 2027 with major academic symposia hosted at multiple pontifical universities in Rome. Reflecting Benedict XVI’s lifelong devotion to sacred music and liturgy, the anniversary celebrations will also feature major concerts and a solemn Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica on April 16, 2027, marking the exact 100th anniversary of his birth.
