In a meeting with rectors of seminaries in France, Pope Francis emphasized the important role of priestly formation during a jubilee pilgrimage. He compared seminary rectors to Eli, the elder priest who guided Samuel to pray, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening”, highlighting their responsibility to support and guide seminarians. He stressed the need for a close-knit educational community involving bishops, priests, religious, professors, and staff, which should also include parishes, movements, and families. The Pope stated that formation should address all aspects of a person and prepare them for their mission.
He highlighted the importance of creating a family-like environment in seminaries, where trust can grow, essential for good discernment. The Pope acknowledged the diverse backgrounds of candidates entering seminaries and urged rectors not to fear this diversity, viewing it as a strength. He called for personalized guidance and welcoming education to promote a united priesthood.
Pope Francis outlined three key priorities for priestly formation: inner freedom for independent judgment guided by faith and charity, human maturity to guard against emotional issues, and mission orientation that focuses on selflessness and service. He cautioned against using love for God as a reason for self-promotion.
