At least five people were killed in an attack by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) jihadists in the village of Mausa, North Kivu province, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, on January 13, 2026. The attackers also set fire to several houses and the Kimbanguist church, leaving the village partially devastated. Several villagers are still missing.
The local population is criticizing the Congolese armed forces for failing to respond to their alarm before the attack. The Wazalendo self-defense militias are also being criticized for their ineffectiveness in preventing the attack.
The ADF, a Ugandan-origin group, has been based in North Kivu for decades and has undergone several transformations, eventually becoming an affiliate of the Islamic State. A significant portion of North Kivu, including its capital Goma, is controlled by the M23, a Rwandan-backed guerrilla group.
