The 16 martyrs of the religious persecution of the 20th century that took place mainly during the years of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) will take place in the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Granada (Spain) on 26 February.
The motto of the beatification is “Your Grace is worth more than life”. The group of martyrs is made up of 14 priests, a seminarian, and a layman. Fr. Cayetano Giménez Martínez presides over this cause for canonization. This priest was born in Alfornón Granada, (Spain) on November 27, 1866.
According to the Archdiocese of Granada, Father Giménez “was a devout, austere and charitable priest. He is a good, wise, humble, and prudent minister of the Lord, an old man with a peaceful and venerable appearance. A man of peace.”
“His parishioners saw that the Servant of God was in love with the Eucharist who spent great moments of adoration before the tabernacle,” they say.
He was in Loja, Granada (Spain) during the war. On 23 July 1936, the day the Spanish Civil War began, he was able to leave Loja in a truck, but he decided to remain in his parish.
They burned his parish, later he was arrested from his friend’s house.
He was in jail for 3 days until he was transferred to the Loja cemetery, with six other people, to be shot.
The Servant of God asked to die last and did so after giving absolution to each of his companions. Father Giménez died shouting: Long live Christ the King!
His remains rest in the Loja cemetery without being identified. He was 69 years old.
