The authorities confirmed that at least six people were killed last week by suspected jihadists in Niger.
“Six people, including a policeman, two customs officers and three civilians, were killed during the attacks overnight from Wednesday to Thursday,” said in a statement released by the interior ministry.
“The Makaldoni border post — where customs officers, gendarmes and police officers are stationed — lies in a zone frequently targeted by jihadists,” wrote AFP.
Jihadists have had control over much of Northern Mali since a coup attempt in 2012. This has enabled them to recruit, train and equip fighters for nearly a decade there. The fighters have crossed the borders into Niger and Burkina Faso, persecuting anyone who opposes their extremist agenda, especially Christian believers.
