December 31: Saint Sylvester I

He was born in Rome, he was elected Poppe on 31 January 314. Sylvester, I was the first Pope to be crowned. He convened the first Constantine Ecumenical Council, Synod, in Nicaea. It was here that the first part of the Doctrine of the Faith was published. Provided to observe Sunday as a holiday in remembrance of the ascension of the Lord. It is believed that the Pope made an iron crown out of the nails of the Holy Cross.

It was also during this time that Emperor Constantine became the custodian of the Church. He was the one who brought unity and new life to Christianity. He acted like a disciple of Christ. But he was not baptized. He was baptized in 337 by Bishop Eusebius at the time of his death.

The founder of Aryanism was a priest named Arius of Alexandria. He opposed the traditional belief in the Holy Trinity. His argument is, ‘The Son is subject to the Father and is inferior to the Father in essence. Many priests and bishops, fascinated by Arius’ rhetoric, argued that these studies were correct.

These theological controversies created two slums in the church. Disturbed by this, the emperor assumed the position of guardian of the church and convened the first universal synod of the church at Nicaea in 325. 314 bishops attended there. The Pope told the bishops who attended the council, “I fear divisions in the Church more than war. It is frightening and painful.”

He called on them to restore unity in the church. The Council of Nicaea, convened in 325, lasted from May 1 to August. The great contribution made by this Synod was the creed and the proclamation cursing Aryanism. Eleven years after the Council convened, in December 335, Sylvester I was called to the Eternal Rest.
