December 23: Saint Servulus

Saint Servulus is the epitome of how close a person can be to God in all of poverty, disease, and misery. St. Gregory writes about St. Servulus the great as follows: “We always see that man on the portico of St. Clement’s church. Everyone in Rome knows him. He is called Servulus.

He has been bedridden since he was young. He cannot stand or get out of bed. He could not even stand up or lean to the side and could not even move his hand towards his mouth. From this man, who is unfortunate in the eyes of the world, we can discern the mysteries of religion.

Servulus, who remains silent and does not complain to anyone, is constantly meditating on the sufferings of our Savior Jesus. He is survived by his loving mother and brother. They read to him the scriptures, especially the Psalms; But also devotional works. By reading it like this, they are all memorized by him.

He sings psalms aloud at night, thanking God for being able to share in Christ’s sufferings. He was rich in terms of poverty. His bed was the pulpit for the proclamation of the Word of God. It converted many.

He approached death by reciting the Psalms aloud. At that moment, Servulus cried out, “Do you not hear the sweet music from heaven?” At that moment his soul parted from his body. Smells emanated from his body until his funeral.
