Vatican Solidarity Drive Delivers Aid to Ukraine Ahead of Papal Envoy’s Visit

A major Vatican solidarity initiative has successfully gathered relief supplies for Ukraine ahead of a key pastoral visit by Archbishop Luis Marín de San Martín, the Papal Almoner. Organized by the Dicastery for the Service of Charity in collaboration with the Governorate of Vatican City State, the drive collected contributions from Holy See employees between October 22 and 24. Several trucks loaded with around 600 boxes of winter clothing, blankets, bed linen, and essential food items are preparing to depart from the Basilica of St. Sophia in Rome—a hub for Ukrainian aid since February 2022—bound for charitable organizations in Kyiv.

Archbishop Marín de San Martín expressed deep gratitude for the overwhelming response from Vatican staff, praising the initiative as a concrete expression of Christian love. He emphasized that the goal was to put charity into immediate, practical action rather than remaining theoretical. Describing the collection as a “beautiful witness of the Church,” the Augustinian archbishop commended the generosity of the donors and the hard work of the dicastery team in sorting the extensive volume of aid for those suffering from the ongoing conflict.

The humanitarian collection serves as a prelude to an official three-day mission to Ukraine beginning October 27, led by Archbishop Marín de San Martín alongside Massimo Ralli, Undersecretary of the Dicastery. Arranged through the Apostolic Nunciature in coordination with both the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and the Latin-rite Catholic Church, the visit aims to provide direct spiritual and material support to a population enduring the devastating impacts of war.
