Pope Leo XIV Returns to the Vatican Following Successful Lung Surgery

Pope Leo XIV was discharged from Rome’s Agostino Gemelli University Hospital on Saturday afternoon following a successful lung operation on Tuesday. The Pontiff has returned to his papal apartments in Vatican City, where he is scheduled to lead the traditional Sunday Angelus prayer at noon from the Apostolic Palace.

The decision to release the Holy Father was announced on Saturday morning by the Holy See Press Office after his medical team confirmed he was fit to return home. According to his doctors, Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora, morning blood tests and a chest X-ray confirmed that the Pope’s clinical condition had stabilized sufficiently to permit his discharge.

Prior to his departure, Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass in the private chapel located on the hospital’s 10th floor. He expressed his deep gratitude to Professor Margaritora—who performed the surgery—along with the attending medical and nursing staff, Catholic University Rector Professor Elena Beccalli, and the executive leadership of the Gemelli Hospital Foundation.
