The Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication has announced the theme for the 61st World Communications Day: “A New Gaze: Paying Attention in the Age of Clickbait.” Released on the feast of St. Gabriel the Archangel, the theme highlights the need for genuine, thoughtful communication in today’s fast-paced digital era.
The press release warns that the modern “attention economy” and the constant stream of superficial online content are impacting both cognitive focus and the quality of human relationships. In response, the Vatican encourages people—particularly Christians—to adopt a shift in perspective by looking at others with care, empathy, and love rather than harsh judgment.
Originating from the Latin word ad-tendere, meaning “to reach out toward the other,” attention is described as a form of generosity. Rather than constantly competing to capture quick clicks, the Vatican calls for protecting meaningful attention as a vital resource to strengthen real relationships and communicate with authentic empathy.
While the exact date of observance varies across different regions as determined by local Bishops’ Conferences, World Communications Day 2027 will be celebrated on May 9 in many countries, including the United States, England, Wales, France, Spain, Poland, and Italy.
