Following a devastating flood crisis across Nepal, Pope Leo XIV has dispatched direct financial assistance through the Dicastery for the Service of Charity. Sent in coordination with the Apostolic Nunciature of Nepal, the Papal contribution provides immediate, concrete relief as search and rescue operations continue and humanitarian needs escalate rapidly throughout the affected regions.
The funding goes directly to Caritas Nepal, operating under the Apostolic Vicariate, to bolster relief efforts that began immediately after the disaster struck. The aid will focus on providing basic necessities, food, and emergency shelter to families who have lost everything in the deluge.
Highlighting the intention behind the gesture, Archbishop Luis MarÃn de San MartÃn, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Service of Charity, described the aid as an initial step to address urgent human needs. He characterized the contribution as a rapid and tangible sign of the Holy Father’s closeness and tenderness toward the most vulnerable, serving as a supportive gesture from the Church during a time of tragedy.
The papal response comes amid a stark humanitarian crisis in Nepal. The confirmed death toll has exceeded 630 people, with nearly 3,000 others—including over 500 foreign nationals—still missing. Emergency operations remain ongoing across the country, with the Nepalese military deployed to rescue more than 100 individuals stranded inside a hydroelectric power plant tunnel in one of the worst-hit districts.
