Pope Appeals for End to West Bank Violence and Advocates for Two-State Solution

Following the Sunday Angelus address, Pope Leo XIV renewed his urgent appeal for an immediate halt to ongoing acts of violence against Palestinians in the West Bank. Addressing the faithful, the Holy Father urged the international community to step forward and accelerate meaningful diplomatic efforts toward a two-state solution, emphasizing that it remains the primary path to securing a just and enduring peace in the Holy Land.
This call aligns with long-standing Vatican diplomacy. The Holy See has consistently maintained that a two-state solution—allowing Israel and Palestine to exist side-by-side within secure, internationally recognized borders—is essential for regional stability. Previous statements delivered by Holy See diplomatic representatives to the United Nations have similarly stressed that lasting peace cannot be achieved through military force, but rather through patient multilateral dialogue, mutual cooperation, and active support for key international agencies like UNRWA.
In addition to his political appeal, the Pope highlighted the upcoming Mediterranean Games taking place in Taranto, Italy. Featuring athletes from countries across Africa, Asia, and Europe surrounding the Mediterranean basin—including four competitors representing the Holy See’s official sports association, Athletica Vaticana—Pope Leo expressed hope that the multi-sport event would serve as a powerful symbol of fraternity, dialogue, and peace among diverse nations.
Concluding his address, the Pontiff extended warm greetings to international pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square. He offered a special blessing to the participants of the annual women’s pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Piekary ÅšlÄ…skie in Upper Silesia, Poland, commending their devotion and spiritual journey.
