1122: Emperor Henry V of the Holy Roman Empire renounces his right to install bishops (investiture of ring and crozier) at the Concordat of Worms in a deal with Pope Callistus II. He also reestablished the freedom of election of the clergy and promised to restore church property.
1571: Demise of John Jewel, a well-known English church reformer.
1738: Repose of Herman Boerhaave in Leyden, a Christian humanist who won recognition as a physician. He showed that urea can be separated from urine and introduced the thermometer into common medical use. He is regarded as the father of modern clinical teaching and of the modern academic hospital.
1840: Demise of Nathanael Emmons (in Franklin, Massachusetts), an influential Congregational theologian and pastor who developed a modified Calvinism that placed more responsibility on individual choice than what is taught in Calvinist theology.
1860: Repose of the Russian theologian Alexei Khomiakov from cholera, while treating the peasants during an epidemic. A Slavophile and a multi-talented person, he had been subject to censorship during his life, but his writings nonetheless influenced Dostoevsky, Solovyov, Florensky, and others a lot.
1950: The airing of the first of the Unshackled broadcasts, a seried whiich elucudates stories of people who find that Christ alone can free from the bondage to sin.
1965: Burial of Joseph Adeyemo Taiwo, a zealous Baptist minister who established many churches in Nigeria.
