1533: Passing away of Alexander, the abbot of Svir and a saintly hermit who also had built a church dedicated to the Trinity.
1616: Chinese officials threaten the Jesuits in Nanjing to arrest and torture of all, who do not despise their faith. Two Jesuits – Alphonse Vagnoni and Alvarõ Semedo – died in prison after torture and starvation.
1743: Baptism of William Paley, who later became a famous Christian apologist, known for his teleological argument of watch and watch-maker: just as a complex watch implies a skilled watchmaker who designed it, the complexity and order of the natural world imply a divine designer, who created it.
1820: Birth of George F. Root, American sacred music editor and composer, who helped in editing almost 75 musical collections, as well as in composing several hundred original sacred melodies, including “When He Cometh.”
1856: Establishment of Wilberforce University in Xenia, Ohio under the auspice of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
1894: Bob Jones Sr., an independent Christian evangelist and educator, is converted at age 11. He always maintained fundamentalist view of the Bible and founded the Bob Jones University in 1926.
1900: Boxer rebels execute missionaries Willie and Helen Peat, their children and associates in China.
1907: Demise of John Joseph Williams, the first Roman Catholic archbishop of Boston.
1916: Juan Lugo, a Mexican evangelist, preaches the first-known Pentecostal message in Puerto Rico. He founded Iglesia de Dios Pentecostal in Puerto Rico in 1920.
