October 27: Saint Odhran of Iona

Saint Odhran (-: 563) also Otteran or  Oran was an Irish abbot. He was born in the 6th century. He was one of the twelve monks who went to the island of Iona with St. Columba. He served for some time as head of the Abbey founded in Iona by Irish monks.

One day, knowing that his death was imminent, he said: “I will be the first person to die on this island who has vowed to live according to the laws of the kingdom of God.”

Unable to watch his friend die, Saint Columba went down to the Abbey after bestowing his final blessings, and while wandering there with grief, he saw a strange sight in the highlands of the sky. The disciples approached and inquired as to the reason for the saint’s astonishment. He immediately replied, “Above you, I see a fierce battle between the angels and the unclean spirits. I see the angels are ascending to paradise with the soul of  Odhran.” At that moment, Odhran’s death occurred.

The island of Iona, which witnessed the life and death of the saint Odhran, later became the mission of the Irish monks. The Irish people still remember Odhran with reverence.
